When It Comes To Social Media, Corgis Are King

This majestic creature is the Pembroke Welsh Corgi:

If you have an Instagram account then you've no doubt seen that signature loaf body and teddy bear face countless times before. Corgis have always been a likable breed--known mostly for their association with The Queen of England--but they began to sploot their way into our hearts and Instagram feeds just a few years ago.

Social media has taken their popularity to a whole new level. In fact, in 2015, a study found that corgi registration in the UK rose 54%.

The rise was credited to the breed’s newfound fame on Instagram.

Why Instagram Loves Corgis

So what’s so great about these fluffy doggy-dwarves? People love underdogs, and corgis are just that. They just simply could not survive in the wild. They need their human counterparts. Corgis have been bred to be adorable domestic companions, but completely impractical for just about anything else (it should be noted that they are technically a herding breed, but due to their stocky frames, they aren’t the ideal the working dog).

1. They have little chunky drumstick legs that clock in at about a half a mile an hour.

2. Comically big ears, perfect for hearing every time a fresh bag of treats is opened.

3. Oddly long and stumpy bodies that could double as a foot stool if so needed.

4. Big heads that seem like they require lots of neck strength to keep upright all day.

5. Unassuming faces with wide eyes and a perpetual smile that just oozes dopey, oblivious enthusiasm.

6. But their most fabulous asset has to be their poofy, nub-tailed derrieres

(We all know the Internet has an unsettling over-the-top obsession with butts, but that’s a post for another day.) If you Google “corgi butts” you’ll stumble upon lists of the best corgi behinds on Instagram, entire blogs dedicated to them, and videos of their suspiciously buoyant booties floating in water.

Corgis are just the epitome of cute. They’re good natured and extremely photogenic--making them the perfect Insta-breed. They’re also a fan favorite on Buzzfeed, which creates some of the most viral content on the Internet. The powerhouse strength and reach of Buzzfeed, along with the sheer number of corgi-based Instagram accounts have worked together to turn these lil fuzz nuggets into a social media phenomenon.

Can’t get enough corgis? Completely understandable. Here are some of the most monumental and exalted corgis on Instagram. Throw them a follow. You won’t regret it.

Can’t. Handle. The. Floof.

50% lion. 50% potato. 100% fuzz nugget.

This handle is misleading because the page actually features TWO corgis: Ralph and his equally magnificent brother George. It’s absolute magic.
